How did Black Friday come about?

The origins of the Black Friday phenomenon are uncertain. According to some historians, the movement originated in the 1960s to indicate the chaos and overcrowding on the streets of Philadelphia on those precise days of the year due to the high discounts only valid on that Friday of the month. Another explanation given to the term Black Friday is that of the colour of the ink used on the retailers' ledgers, specifically black for gains and red for losses. Some sources establish the beginning of Black Friday in 1920, when Macy's department stores officially kicked off Christmas shopping, on the day after Thanksgiving day. What is certain is that Black Friday originated in the United States and falls every year on the last Friday of November; to this day it is the event that kicks off Christmas shopping, a fixture all over the world with exclusive discounts available for just a few days.

Anything. There is no clearly defined category for this type of offer, every type of business does not escape the Black Friday phenomenon. In addition to products from the tech world, sales with big discounts have become increasingly popular in recent years in the food & beverage sector such as wines, sparkling wines and spirits, but also in niche categories such as bag in box or bitters.

When will Black Friday 2024 take place?

Black Friday 2024 this year happens on 29 November, the fifth Friday of the month, less than a month before Christmas. The occasion started with heavy discounts on this one day of the week, but over time it has expanded to the whole weekend, including Saturday and Sunday. Many are also proposing longer periods for Black Friday, from a week to a whole month. In the shopping world, November is synonymous with Black Friday.
